People on a pilgrimage read the Catholic Herald at Ireland’s National Marian Shrine in Knock, Ireland. The Story of Knock began on the August 21, 1879, when Our Lady, St. Joseph, and St. John the Evangelist appeared at the south gable of the Knock parish church. From this miraculous apparition Knock has grown to the status of an internationally recognized Marian Shrine. One and a half million pilgrims visit the shrine annually. Seminarians Joe Baker, Scott Emerson, and Gabriel Lopez-Betanzos take time to read the seminarian issue of the Diocese of Madison Catholic Herald at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. This picture was taken during a reception held after the deaconate ordination at St. Peter’s Basilica. The seminarians also took time to visit with Scott’s and Gabriel’s parents, Fr. Tait Schroeder and Fr. Mark Miller, who were also at the reception. Scott’s parents are Diane and Steve Emerson of Spring Green. Gabriel’s parents are Jose Lopez and Berta Betanzos of Lansing, Mich. A trip to research family genology and explore the country gave members of the Hario family a chance to pose with Fr. John Fitzgerald, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Cork, Ireland. Pictured, from left, are: John Hario, Colleen Hario, Father Fitzgerald, Kathy Trickle, and Jeanette Hario. Colleen and Kathy are members of St. Dennis Parish, Madison, and John and Jeanette live in Des Moines, Iowa. Robert Dorn, a member of Monsignor O’Reilly Knights of Columbus Council 746, Baraboo, reads the respect life issue of the Catholic Herald on the steps of the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., during the pro-life March for Life on January 23. Fr. Gabriel Rach, back left, was ordained to the priesthood for the Canons Regular of St. Augustine, on December 30, in Klosterneburg, Austria. He serves the parishes of St. Patrick and St. Rocco in Glen Cove, N.Y. Also pictured with Father Gabriel are his uncle, James Wagner, a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Reedsburg, and his brother Bryan Rach, and nephew. Fr. Cy Weisensel, who lives at the Bishop O'Connor Center in Madison, takes time to peruse the Catholic Herald in Pasadena, Calif., as he prepares to enter the prestigious Rose Bowl Stadium for the football game between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Stanford Cardinals on January 1. He was joined there by friends Charles and Colleen Reis and Joan Pagel of St. Peter Parish, Madison. Marcie Abell, left, and Rosie Weiner of Waterloo, members of Holy Family Parish, Waterloo/Marshall, read the Catholic Herald in front of the Basilica in Wadowice, while on a pilgrimage to Poland. Blessed Pope John Paul II was baptized there and grew up in an apartment across the street, which was undergoing renovation. Betty Pendleton, left, of Our Lady Queen of Parish in Madison and Audrey Lukes of Sacred Hearts Parish in Sun Prairie read the Catholic Herald in front of the Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, Germany, in November 2012. A reliquary said to contain the remains of the Three Kings is enshrined at the cathedral. People from All Saints Parish (ASP), Berlin, and Our Lady of the Lake (OLOL), Green Lake, were part of a group of 41 who traveled to Panama this year on a 10-day mission trip to help Fr. Wally Kasuboski build a dam to provide safe drinking water to about 16 villages. Pictured are, from left, front row: Tom Jensen, Jr, Bernadette Krentz, and Carol Brennan (ASP), Betty Rowley (OLOL), Kim Holiday (ASP,) and Robin Wallenfang (OLOL); back row: John Brennan and Tom Jensen (ASP), Mark Kramer (OLOL), and Dr. Dan Resop. Fr. Larry Bakke, pastor of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, Monroe, and director of the Apostolate to the Handicapped of the Diocese of Madison (right in tan jacket), hosted a pilgrimage for 40 people to the Holy Land from October 30 to November 10, 2011. Here they are reading the Catholic Herald outside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
