Catholic Schools Planning Process- Information

Areas of Catholic Schools Planning:

Catholic Leadership:  Considers the Catholic culture of the school.  Is the school fulfilling its mission as a Catholic school? How can we ensure strong, dynamic Catholic leadership in our schools for the future?

Academic Curriculum:  Addresses issues related to the rigor and relevance of the curriculum, best teaching practices and curricular standards.  How can our ongoing assessment and planning insure that our Catholic schools remain great academically?

Enrollment Management: Considers how well Catholic school education is presented and positioned in the market place.  How can we manage enrollment from both a recruitment and retention perspective?  How do we involve more people in the enrollment process?  How will the school continue to attract the right quantity, quality and diversity of students in our school?

Fiscal Stewardship: Analyzes the costs of operating a school and the current funding structure.  Considers questions regarding tuition, fundraising, parish support, support from other parishes in the cluster, endowments, etc.

Steering Committee
Members of the Steering Committee represent diocesan offices, principals, pastors, and leaders in business and finance from the Diocesan community.  The Steering Committee determined the four major areas to be addressed by the planning process.  It also coordinates all of the work leading up to the Diocesan-Wide Congress and will prepare the final recommendations which will be submitted to Bishop Morlino.

 Catholic Schools Survey
In February 2009, people throughout the Diocese were invited to complete the Catholic Schools Survey.  Over 1,000 people completed the survey, which aimed to discover people's attitudes towards and perceptions of Catholic schools.  While the survey did not intend to discover the successes and deficiencies of individual schools, it did provide a very general picture of areas where our schools excel and areas which need improvement.

 Core Teams
Core Team members within each planning area determined what data was needed, analyzed the results of the schools survey, created a purpose statement, and identified strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.  Ultimately, challenges were identified in each of the planning areas and people throughout the Diocese were invited to attend Task Force meetings in various locations throughout the Diocese in May-July 2009 to view the work of the Core Teams and offer their input.

Catholic Schools Planning Study Background

Beginning in September, 2008, the Office of Catholic Schools began a major 18-24 month planning process to ensure the future of Catholic schools in the Diocese.  This effort is a direct response to directive #7 issued by Bishop Morlino at the conclusion of the Guided by the Spirit planning process.  According to directive #7, “All parishes, those with and those without schools, will actively participate in a diocesan wide comprehensive school study to promote and increase our diocesan commitment to Catholic education as outlined in the USCCB publication, ‘Renewing Our Commitment to Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Third Millennium.’”  Questions regarding deographics, population gain and loss, tuition, curriculum, and funding sources, in addition to many others, must be answered in order to plan well to ensure the future of our schools.  The comprehensive schools study will give us the information we need to formulate solid and successful plans to ensure that Catholic schools in the Diocese of Madison thrive for generations to come.
