Arts Standards
Mission/Philosophy Statement
Art enhances the academic, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional development of the student and calls forth a creative response. Education through art, including the contribution and significance of religious art, provides a visual and aesthetic way of knowing and appreciating God's creation.
Introduction
The art curriculum standards listed below ask students to show what they know at each grade level. The standards increase in complexity as the developmental level of students change. However, some of the standards remain the same across grade levels. In such standards, it is the content that changes. For example, in the section, "Learning about artists and art from other cultures," the teacher would select a different artist and culture for a grade level. Ideally, the artist and culture selected would connect with the content from other subject areas at that grade level. For example, if students are studying Wisconsin history, they might explore the culture and art of Native Americans, as well as the art and crafts created by immigrants. Or, if students are learning about Church history, students could study Christian art from the same period. In each example, students could create their own art based on the styles that were explored.
