Theological, or major seminaries, are the primary institutions for forming men to serve the Church as priests. In order to attend a major seminary, the seminarian must have a diocese sponsoring him. The sponsoring diocese will be the location in which the seminarian will serve upon ordination. Seminarians engage a rigorous academic, formational and spiritual program for five to seven years to prepare them for priestly ministry. Upon ordination, seminarians earn a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology (S.T.B.), or a Master's Degree in Divinity (M.Div.). Some institutions provide the opportunity to earn both degrees. Many seminaries also offer post-graduate coursework for priests and laity who are interested in pursuing advanced degrees, including the Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.), the Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (S.S.L.), the doctorate in Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) and the doctorate in Ministry (D.Min.).

It resides within the archdiocesan territory of Denver.
Archbishop Chaput announced his plan to open a theological institute to serve the formation needs of clergy and laity engaged in the new evangelization. As the first phase in the development of a larger institute, the seminary grants pontifical degrees to its students in consequence of its affiliation with the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, Italy. Students who lack a bachelor’s degree may take courses at the seminary and apply them for credit toward a B. A. in philosophy at Regis University in Denver.
