About the Seminary, College and High School Programs We Utilize

Seminaries and Formation Programs

The Diocese uses a broad range of educational institutions to ensure that our semianrians have the best possible training and preparation - theologically, spiritually and pastorally.

Many wonder why we do not send our seminarians solely to one institution.  The answer is partly because the diocese wishes to have a well-rounded presbyterate, educated in a variety of religious traditions and locations.  While each seminary program provides the basic framework of studies and formation, each institution is unique unto itself, and we believe that educating our seminarians using a wide selection of institutions will provide the people of the Diocese with well-rounded priests, rooted in the many rich traditions which our seminary programs pride themselves in offering.

The Diocese is proud to be affiliated with the following theological, college and high school seminary programs.  Each seminarian is personally selected to participate in a particular program, based upon his needs, and the skills that he already brings to his formation and education..

Major Seminary Programs

Theological, or major seminaries, are the primary institutions for forming men to serve the Church as priests.  In order to attend a major seminary, the seminarian must have a diocese sponsoring him.  The sponsoring diocese will be the location in which the seminarian will serve upon ordination.  Seminarians engage a rigorous academic, formational and spiritual program for five to seven years to prepare them for priestly ministry.  Upon ordination, seminarians earn a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology (S.T.B.), or a Master's Degree in Divinity (M.Div.).  Some institutions provide the opportunity to earn both degrees.  Many seminaries also offer post-graduate coursework for priests and laity who are interested in pursuing advanced degrees, including the Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.), the Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (S.S.L.), the doctorate in Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) and the doctorate in Ministry (D.Min.).
