Procedures For Commentators

1. Arrive at least 15 minutes before Mass. (If for some reason the Commentator does not arrive, you may be called upon to be both the Lector and the Commentator.)
2. The binder containing the introduction, list of petitions, and any announcements is found on the counter in the Sacristy. Study these before Mass begins.
3. Before the opening hymn, read the introduction from the podium and then return to your pew.
4. Sit in the front pew marked “Reserved” or in another pew near the front. Lectors and Commentators usually sit in the pews near the confessionals.
5. Before the congregation is finished reciting the Creed, walk up the side aisle to the podium. Be ready to read the petitions when the priest asks for them.
6. After you read the petitions, wait for the priest to finish his prayer and then return to your pew.
7. Any announcements are to be made at the end of Mass.
8. After Mass, return the binder to the counter in the Sacristy.
9. If you cannot make your scheduled time, arrange for a sub and let your partner know. On the back of your schedule sheet is a list of all Lectors/Commentators and their phone numbers.
10. Alternate between being the Lector and Commentator.

Procedures For Lectors

1. Arrive at least 15 minutes before Mass.  (If for some reason the Commentator does not arrive, you may be called upon to be both the Lector and the Commentator.)
2. The Lectionary (the book containing the readings) is found on the counter in the Sacristy.  Put this book on the podium before Mass begins.
3. As the opening hymn begins, walk up the center aisle behind the servers and in front of the priest while holding the Book of the Gospels up. When you reach the altar, stand to the right of the priest and servers, bow together, and then place the Book of the Gospels on the altar in the clear plastic holder.  Return to your pew.
4. Sit in the front pew marked “Reserved” or in another pew near the front.  Lectors and Commentators usually sit in the pews near the confessionals.
5. When it is time to read, walk up the side aisle, bow, and read from your book on the podium.
6. After the first reading, sit in the chair near the podium while the cantor sings the responsorial psalm.  When the cantor has finished, return to the podium for the second reading.
7. When you are finished, place your book on the side of the podium and return to your pew.  The priest will pick up the Book of the Gospels from the altar and carry it to the podium for the reading of the Gospel.
8. After Mass, return the Lectionary to the counter in the Sacristy.

Suggestions for Reading

• Practice the readings often and out loud to become familiar with them and the message they convey.  If the readings do not make sense to you, they won’t make sense to the congregation.  They are listening to you…be concerned about getting the message to them.
• It’s important how you read.  It’s not just speaking words, but giving meaning to the readings.
• Read slowly and distinctly.
• Pause when necessary and for effectiveness.
• Pronounce words clearly.
• Emphasize key words.
• Project your voice so you can be heard in the very back of the church. A microphone cannot do it without your help.
• Remember…it is always an honor and a privilege to read the Word of the Lord!
